Lantern House, Ulverston
The conversion of an old disused warehouse in the centre of Ulverston became the Headquarters of Welfare state international. With a motto of “Engineers of the imagination”, it required skilled management and craftsmanship to create some of the unique features required by the Arts organisation, which has made it one of the most iconic buildings in Ulverston.
The lead-covered curved roof to the cruck oak barn to the rear, A concealed steel frame forming the internal arts and crafts offices and workshops inside the limestone external facade. The towers to the gable form a very distinctive feature, housing the circular stairs, lift, and topped by a 5-tonne concrete capping and communication radar.
